No guardaremos silencio…
http://thisiscommonsense.com/pdf/SixPamphlets-WhiteRose.pdf
Y Asi, con el lema, “This is where we stand and we will not remain silent”, comencé a escribir artículos.

ONE VOICE
by Efraín Suárez-Arce, M.Ed
“Conflict is the essential core of a free and open society.” Saul Alinsky
You simply cannot change the world without conflict, period.
Whether you want to change the corporate tower or the ivory tower, conflict must always precede change, because in most of the large institutions in our society, there are too many entrenched elites who simply refuse to give up their power without a fight. In no other government agency in Puerto Rico has this become more painfully obvious than in our Department of Education.
Traditionally, these gatekeepers (who are accountable to no one) have purported to operate in the public interest, but they remain out of touch with the public. Rather than empower people that they are supposed to serve, they have designed rules and loopholes to keep the rabble out of their inner sanctums, where their ideas wouldn’t affect their decision-making process. Many of these gatekeepers have built walls to protect the sanctity of their turf.
Only people with the proper pedigree – rich parents or family members, friends in high places – are invited into the club. The value of an opinion or idea is determined by the social status of the person expressing it. Passion was considered boorish and unrefined. Youth is seen as a disadvantage. And these gatekeepers remained stationed at the doorways to the halls of power.
The results? A homogenized culture. A disengaged citizenry, cynical and despondent over its inability to effect change, and a powerful elite unhampered and unchallenged in the pursuit of its own interests over those of society at large.
Puerto rican teachers have become society’s new caste of untouchables. Instead of being treated with dignity, respect, fairness and compassion, our teachers are publicly vilified and blamed for every ill that has befallen the puerto rican public school system. Our teachers have to hold down second jobs to make ends meet, they live in fear of retiring into poverty. They are overworked, underpaid, overwhelmed by paperwork and constantly threatened and intimidated by the kaleidoscope of Common Core Standards, Value Added Measurement, Standardized Testing and “Teaching to the Test”.
But the story that no one talks about how teachers are brutalized every single day by child abuse witch hunts where administrative procedures are used railroad them and to brand them as incompetent and/or abusive and kick them to the curb. No one talks about how many reputations have been ruined and how many lives have been destroyed.
But all that has begun to change. A new generation of mature, conservative participants, no longer content to simply sit on the sidelines as left-wing radical socialist man-child “militants” make themselves a loud microscopic minority in the imaginary world of Facebook.
I have begun to realize that in order to create long-lasting change in a democracy and take an active role in our society, we must seek to shape public opinion by making their voices heard, their ideas and positions clear, and their cause visible. In today’s world, that means that they must manage modern media as well as its technology in order to be able to confront these gatekeepers on their own turf and to make their voices heard.
My name is Efraín Suárez-Arce. This is where I stand, and I will not remain silent…
EL MARTILLO 🔨 DE SUÁREZ – WORDPRESS
“Philosophical Perspectives in Education: Educational Philosophies”
by Nora M. Cohen
“Philosophy begins with wonder” – Socrates
Philosophy means “love of wisdom.” It is made up of two Greek words, philo, meaning love, and sophos, meaning wisdom. Philosophy helps teachers to reflect on key issues and concepts in education, usually through such questions as: What is being educated? What is the good life? What is knowledge? Philosophers think about the meaning of things and interpretation of that meaning. Even simple statements, such as “What should be learned? Or What is adolescence?” set up raging debates that can have major implications. For example, what happens if an adolescent commits a serious crime? One interpretation may hide another. If such a young person is treated as an adult criminal, what does it say about justice, childhood, and the like? Or if the adolescent is treated as a child, what does it say about society’s views on crime?
Your educational philosophy is your beliefs about why, what and how you teach, whom you teach, and about the nature of learning. It is a set of principles that guides professional action through the events and issues teachers face daily. Sources for your educational philosophy are your life experiences, your values, the environment in which you live, interactions with others and awareness of philosophical approaches. Learning about the branches of philosophy, philosophical world views, and different educational philosophies and theories will help you to determine and shape your own educational philosophy, combined with these other aspects.
When you examine a philosophy different from your own, it helps you to “wrestle” with your own thinking. Sometimes this means you may change your mind. Other times, it may strengthen your viewpoint; or, you may be eclectic, selecting what seems best from different philosophies. But in eclecticism, there is a danger of sloppy and inconsistent thinking, especially if you borrow a bit of one philosophy and stir in some of another. If serious thought has gone into selection of strategies, theories, or philosophies, this is less problematic. For example, you may determine that you have to vary your approach depending on the particular learning needs and styles of a given student. At various time periods, one philosophical framework may become favored over another.
For example, the Progressive movement led to quite different approaches in education in the 1930s. But there is always danger in one “best or only” philosophy. In a pluralistic society, a variety of views are needed.”

NO GUARDAREMOS SILENCIO…

These two articles from the UK in 2009 are very reflective of the situations that teachers in Puerto Rico face every day in 2018. The difference is that in Puerto Rico no one has dared to talk, much less write about this. It is only after the suicide of teacher Melba Cuevas-Santos on October 26, 2018 that the press and the general public have begun to take notice of the problems of workplace harassment, workplace bullying, gaslighting and mobbing that are so pervasive in our schools. But still no one in Puerto Rico wants to talk about protecting teachers from being thrown to the lions with false and malicious accusations of institutional abuse...
